The Exmoor Pony Centre
The Exmoor Pony Centre

The Centre finally opened its doors on July 26th 2006, after 8 years of hard work by a small band of dedicated supporters, headed by Valerie Sherwin, who formed The Moorland Mousie Trust, a registered Charity since 2000. The sole aim of the Trust is the promotion and conservation of the Exmoor Pony. You can read more about it on its dedicated page.

We offer half day experiences with the ponies, which include a good two hour ride, giving those competent at walk, trot and canter in open spaces a picturesque hack over Winsford Hill which might take in the ancient Tarr Steps, the spectacular views over the Punch Bowl, or the curious Caractacus Stone, as well as encountering the resident herds of Exmoor ponies, whose ancestors have roamed free for hundreds, if not thousands of years, and much more of the abundant wildlife which makes Exmoor so special. Cost £40 per person. For those aged 10 years and over.

For those with little or no riding experience, we recommend our “taster sessions”.  These are private, individually booked sessions tailored to your request, lasting up to an hour and a half for both children and adults. Clients have ranged in age from 4 to 78 years! During this time, you will learn more about this special, ancient rare breed, about horse/pony care, and if you wish, the session will finish with a chance to ride on a pony in a comfortable, controlled environment. Many of our clients come for these sessions with the aim of achieving a ride out on the Moor. Cost from £27.50 dependent on numbers.

Whilst Exmoor ponies are renowned for their stamina and hardiness, their average height is 12.2hh, and there will be a weight restriction of 12.5 stone.

Our ponies are extremely well trained, but any horse riding activity has the potential to be dangerous.  Whilst every precaution will be taken to ensure your safety, do bear in mind that 2 hours on horseback is a long time if you do find that you are not happy in the saddle.

Please note that as a charity we need to provide staff for your experience, therefore a cancellation fee is applicable.
